Richard was born in the freezing cold of northern Minnesota, and even there he was crazy about the lakes and falls and would go for a swim whenever he could. It was Timothy, his dad, who taught him how to dive. They'd drive to the beach then go a few miles off the coast in Timothy's little sailboat, carrying oxygen tanks and a couple of sandwiches. Dad would research recent and ancient shipwrecks, and they'd dive looking for any useful or nice-looking thing.
